Social and historical perspectives of curriculum development

When considering my teaching style, two philosophies stand out: the Re-conceptualist Perspective and the Holistic Approach aptly capture the teaching strategies employed in my classroom.

  1. Holistic Approach and the reasons why it is a strategy I use in my classroom:

    • It encourages interconnected learning: The holistic approach recognizes that knowledge is interconnected across various subjects and domains. By promoting group work and peer learning, it allows students to explore different perspectives and make connections between different areas of knowledge.

    • It emphasizes social and emotional development: Group work fosters social skills such as communication, collaboration, and empathy, which are essential for success in both academic and real-world settings.

    • Lastly, it addresses diverse learning needs: Holistic teaching recognizes that students have different learning styles and strengths. By incorporating technology as a self-centered teaching tool, I can cater to diverse learning needs and preferences, providing personalized learning experiences for each student.

  2. Re-conceptualist Perspective and why I feel it is useful practice I use in my classroom:

    • Challenges traditional educational paradigms: Re-conceptualist educators critique traditional approaches to teaching and learning and advocate for more student-centered, inquiry-based methods. By encouraging group work and peer learning, the teacher shifts the focus from the teacher as the sole authority to the students as active participants in their own learning process.

    • Promotes critical thinking and problem-solving: Group work encourages students to engage in critical thinking and problem-solving as they collaborate with peers to explore, analyze, and solve complex problems.

    • Empowers students as active learners: By integrating technology as a self-centered teaching tool, the teacher empowers students to take ownership of their learning journey. Students can use technology to explore topics of interest, conduct research, and create multimedia presentations, fostering a sense of autonomy and self-directed learning.

In summary, I feel both holistic and re-conceptualist teaching philosophies and strategies align with my emphasis on group work, peer learning, and the use of technology as a self-centered teaching tool. These approaches prioritize interconnected learning, social and emotional development, critical thinking, problem-solving, and student empowerment, making them suitable choices for creating engaging, student-centered learning environments in my 4th-grade classroom.
